Lynne Walker is looking to take her fundraising goal to new heights after surpassing the minimum requirement in less than 24 hours.
The REALTOR® with Sutton Group Canwest will be attempting a day-long hike through Alberta’s mountain playground just west of Calgary in an effort to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Walker’s original goal was to raise $250, but she’s already at $390 with a week to go before the challenging climb spanning 20 kilometres through the Upper Galatea Lakes in Kananaskis Country or along the scenic Terrace Trails.
When asked why she wanted to take part, Walker replied, “I’m hiking for those who are unable to hike due to this terrible disease. No one is immune from it. We must find a cure.”
An estimated 100,000 Canadians are living with MS, including a few of Lynne’s friends and one relative.
“I’ve witnessed their sad deterioration and loss of mobility and wanted to do something to help,” she said.
Even for the experienced hiker, the MS Hike 2016 will be grueling. Walker said she feels prepared for the September 10 trek having attempted seven full-day mountain hikes already this summer. She trains five days a week and recently completed a national womens’ strength and fitness competition.
Since its inception in 1948, the MS Society of Canada has invested $140 million into researching the mysterious disease. This investment has led to significant results such as advances in imaging, diagnosis, genetics, tissue repair, rehabilitation and disease-modifying therapies.
