Victoria’s Our Place started small in 1967, as a coffee house intended to provide short term shelter from the rain. Many years later, Our Place now runs a purpose-built headquarters in downtown Victoria and serves more than 1,200 meals a day, offers 45 transitional housing units, and provides health, education and practical care to citizens in need.
Local REALTORS® (including Past-Presidents of the Victoria Real Estate Board) recognized the much needed support Our Place provides, and the on-going funding requirements that are a reality of such a large organization. Out of this need grew this October’s REALTOR® Month, where local REALTORS® challenged each other to sponsor a breakfast and volunteer at Our Place.
“It was a natural fit for us,” says VREB Past-President Eric Charman. “Waking up in the cold with nothing to look forward to is about as depressing as it gets. If we can help make someone’s day just that little bit better, then it means the world to us.”
Don Evans, Executive Director of Our Place notes that there is even more growth to come for Our Place. “This winter, we’re expanding our hours to better meet the needs of this vulnerable population, so to receive this much needed and generous help at such a crucial state is a true blessing.”
