Helping those in need, whether through affordable housing programs or in coping with testifying at a court appearance, are just two initiatives the Calgary Real Estate Board Foundation has been supporting for over 20 years.
On June 28th, both the Calgary Police Service’s Court Support Program and the Crestwood Affordable Housing Development benefited from the ninth annual Building Hope Charity Golf Tournament held at Lynx Ridge Golf Club.
Established in 1987, The Calgary Real Estate Board Charitable Foundation has primarily supported Calgary’s community shelters and other shelter-related organizations. Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed over $2 million to the community. The Foundation’s current focus is now on the Crestwood Affordable Housing Development – an affordable housing development in the community of Millican-Ogden in Calgary’s southeast.
Crestwood was developed as a partnership between the CREB Charitable Foundation and all three levels of government with the objective of building a new 60-unit rental housing development. This development will provide affordable rents to low-income households with children, and persons with mobility difficulties.
For the past five years the CREB Charitable Foundation has provided the Calgary Police Service the means to operate a Court Support Program within their Victim Assistance Unit. The Court Support Program helps victims and/or witnesses aged three to 17 prepare to testify at trial.
It was a perfect day for golf and the support was overwhelming as 136 golfers teed off to help these two great causes. The golfers were also treated to a visit from the police service’s HAWC2 crime-fighting helicopter and a chance to bid on an exciting fly-along at the auction following the tournament. In total, the tournament raised $49,292.20, which will be equally split between the two organizations.
“Events like the Annual CREB Charitable Foundation tournament are vital to supporting the services and programs provided by the CPS Court Services and providing safe affordable housing to Calgarians with the Crestwood initiative,” said Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier. “Your efforts are making a difference in the lives of many Calgarians and their families and help to strengthen our community.”
Calgary REALTORS® have pledged $1.5 million for the $13.2 million Crestwood Affordable Housing Development, and are well on their way to fulfilling their fund-raising commitment.
The Crestwood development is scheduled for completion in late 2007/early 2008 and the Court Support Program is available to victims and/or witnesses 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
