More than 170 golfers and 40 volunteers gathered at the Alberta Springs Golf Course in Red Deer, Alberta, on June 20, 2014, for the 3rd Annual Royal LePage Network Realty Corp. Golf Tournament in support of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation and the Central Alberta Woman’s Emergency Shelter (CAWES).
For the first time in three years, participants were treated to a day of sunny weather and took full advantage of their time on the course playing for prizes and a $1,000,000 hole-in-one contest.
Later that day, during the dinner and auction, CAWES Executive Director Ian Wheeliker took to the stage to accept a $21,500 cheque representing donations made by Royal LePage agents from their commissions. In addition, a total of $44,000 was raised at the tournament, bringing the three year total to nearly $130,000.
In a mock prize draw, Wheeliker was led to believe he was the winner of a new laptop and graciously insisted that the laptop go to the shelter. He was then surprised to see tournament organizers produce 16 additional laptops – one for each room in the shelter and two spares.
“On a recent tour of the shelter, I noticed that once women put their children to bed, there was very little for them to do in their bedrooms,” said Norm Jenson, owner-manager of Royal LePage Network Realty Corp. “Having a laptop each will allow the women in shelter some entertainment, as well as a resource for searching for employment and housing. As a company, we were thrilled to make this donation and are thankful to the community for their sensational support of our annual tournament.”
