Siloam Mission, a homeless shelter in the core of downtown Winnipeg, was hopping on Good Friday with over 30 REALTOR® members, staff and family members of the Manitoba Real Estate Association (MREA). This was the first organized volunteer event of the newly created REALTORS Care® Committee. Everyone in attendance pitched in and served up over 500 meals to Winnipeg’s less fortunate.
“The real estate market has not slowed down this spring nor has our kitchen,” said Siloam Mission Executive Director, John Mohan. Committee members were able to tug at some heart strings and get the complete Turkey Dinner donated, which included 28 turkeys, weighing 600 lbs, stuffing, carrots, potatoes and 55 pies.
MREA President, Ron Tardiff rolled up his sleeves, dug into the stuffing and served up the plates said after the function, “Given the obvious enthusiasm of the committee, I’m certain this will be the first in a long list of accomplishments that our membership can and will be proud of.”
Easter weekend is the second busiest time of the year for the Mission and volunteers were kept very busy with three dinner sittings within a 3-hour time span.
Deborah Goodfellow, Chair of the REALTORS Care® Committee is already planning the next event. She said of the day “The whole day cost our members nothing, but an investment of time and the return on the investment was huge. It was great to give back to the community.”
