Moncton REALTOR® Braves the Cold to Raise Money for Local Youth

For Ian Franklin, a REALTOR® and Vice President Emeritus with Cushman & Wakefield Atlantic in Moncton, New Brunswick, helping young people succeed is transformational. It’s why he’s been a member of his local Rotary Club for more than 30 years, and captained the Dream Team for Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) for the last six.

“I love being part of something much greater than me, that makes an extraordinary difference in the lives of my fellow citizens,” Franklin says.

As a Rotarian, Ian became familiar with Youth Impact Jeunesse, a Moncton-based charitable organization established in 1985 that provides transitional housing, residential treatment programs and in-home family support to youth who need it, with the aim of inspiring and empowering young people, and giving them the tools and support to break down obstacles to success in their lives.

“Being in real estate, the subject of different degrees of homelessness or precarious living situations resonates with me both on a professional and personal level,” Franklin says. “I like doing this because it’s the right thing to do. It’s amazing how people step up.”

CNOY is held every February with the objective of helping people experiencing hurt, hunger and homelessness. By walking in the cold, volunteers get a sense of the challenges faced by people suffering through homelessness during the winter months.

Franklin’s Moncton Dream Team has raised $300,000 for Youth Impact Jeunesse over the six years he’s been a captain. Twice they were the top fundraising team in Canada and three times they finished second. In February 2022, the Dream Team raised close to $70,000 – the highest amount ever raised by any team in the history of CNOY in Canada.

This year, Ian was joined on the Dream Team by four fellow REALTORS® and 9 other community members (including Mel Kennah, executive director of Youth Impact Jeunesse), with team members raising between $650 and $16,000 each.

“The Dream Team helps to make solutions possible,” says Kennah. “They create increased opportunity and provide much needed support for young citizens of Greater Moncton who are each struggling to make their life a better one. Ian Franklin has created a ‘super team’ that helps turn at-risk youth into taxpaying, contributing, connected members of society.”

In total, 63 teams and 375 walkers from Moncton raised $149,043 for Youth Impact Jeunesse. Franklin’s Dream Team raised $56,533 this year, making them number one in the country yet again. The amount raised by his team year-after-year says so much about the generosity and compassion of people in Moncton.

The level of homelessness that emerged post-COVID is monumental, Franklin says. “Nobody really knows why, but it’s everybody’s problem. Our challenges with young people are starting earlier than high school, and we’re not as engaged in the public school system.” Dangers that contribute to the homelessness problem, such as drug addiction and child prostitution, are occurring at younger ages. “It’s scary.”

That’s why it’s important that organizations like Youth Impact Jeunesse are doing so much to help get kids get back on the right track – by getting out into the community and reaching kids where they are.

“When you see some of the successes, and there’s been lots of them, kids that have got themselves in over their heads, whether it’s prostitution or drugs or whatever, and you see them come out on the other side with various levels of success, those are the stories that keep you pumped,” Franklin says. “It’s a neat thing to see.”

Since 2011, CNOY has raised more than $75 million in 190 Canadian communities, with 100 percent of the money raised going to support charity partners like Youth Impact Jeunesse. This year, CNOY raised more than $13.8 million, with 6,321 teams, 40,601 walkers, 6,327 volunteers, 141,267 donors and 2,500 sponsors taking part.

Amongst them were more than 130 REALTOR®-driven teams who, like the Franklin’s Dream Team, raised money for local shelter and housing-related charities.

Teams from the Saskatchewan REALTORS® Association raised nearly $5000 for their respective charities.

While in Nanaimo, RE/MAX teams joined forces to raise money for the Island Crisis Care Society.
