For two days in June, Moncton’s Jones Lake was alive with the sounds of beating drums and friendly competition. The third annual Greater Moncton Dragon Boat Festival was held June 6 and 7 and was the event’s most successful one yet.
Helping the festival raise over $90,000 were the REALTORS Care® Rowers Team – a group of local Real Estate firms from all around Moncton who joined forces for the race.
Jan Keirstead of Century 21 Countryside Realty described the team as “a motley crew from different agencies.” Jan was also the team’s drummer and was rewarded for her hard work and cheerleading. Her Cleopatra costume earned her the “Best Dressed Drummer” award.
“We were looking at ways for REALTORS® to get involved in the community and to get REALTORS® together to have fun,” said Keirstead. “We put a feeler out to see if agents would be interested and the response was fantastic…next year we might even have two teams.”
There were 29 boats taking part in Saturday’s corporate and community races and the team of REALTORS® placed fourth. As for money raised, The REALTORS Care® Rowers raised the most money, bringing in approximately $5,600. The team is donating all the money raised to the Sick Children’s Fund.
The Dragon Boat Festival raises money and awareness for the Moncton Lions Club Sick Children’s Fund, which helps families with seriously ill children cover the financial cost of travel to and from the hospital, medical equipment and medication not covered by government funding.
