Collecting items for the food bank wasn’t on the donation radar for the Saint John Real Estate Board, but when the shelves at Saint John Community Food Basket Inc. became bare, REALTORS® rallied.
During an impromptu two week-long food drive, the New Brunswick board managed to collect enough food to fill three full grocery carts, two trucks and one car trunk.
“Pretty much all the REALTORS® in our area united and did little fundraisers in their offices,” said Amanda Long, executive assistant at the Saint John Real Estate Board. “When the food bank put out a cry for help because the cupboards were empty, the REALTORS® felt strongly about helping out.”
Long said there was a desperate need for breakfast items, so an abundance of cereal, peanut butter and canned items were brought in by REALTORS®. She said REALTORS® were challenging one another as the food drive went along.
“We put a two-week deadline on the food drive and everyone was interested and contributing what they could. It really didn’t take a whole lot of effort to organize, but we managed to donate a lot,” Long said.
The Saint John Real Estate Board normally donates to the local hospital foundation and picks a charity every year to support at Christmas.
