As part of its 75th anniversary celebrations, the Kitchener-Waterloo Association of REALTORS® (KWAR) sponsored a Native Gardening Project at the Huron Natural Area (HNA). Spanning over 250 acres, the HNA is an awe-inspiring destination and one of the most valuable natural areas in Waterloo region. The HNA is a partnership between the City of Kitchener, Waterloo Catholic School Board (WCDSB) and the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB).
“We greatly appreciate the contribution and efforts of local REALTORS®, which will assist in the education of people across the region helping them to become good environmental stewards,” said Josh Shea, Natural Areas Coordinator for the City of Kitchener.
REALTORS® and their families gathered on Saturday, June 2 with their green thumbs at the ready and planted hundreds of flowers and shrubs at the entrance of the HNA, all of which were native to Ontario. The goal of the Native Gardening Project is to educate people about native species while increasing and maintaining the local biodiversity of the HNA. Students from the local school boards regularly visit the area to study the ecosystem.
“Maintaining and improving the environment is something REALTORS® feel very passionate about,” said President Sara Hill.
The KWAR also donated $4,500 to the City of Kitchener to assist in the revitalization and maintenance of the HNA. REALTORS®‘ efforts will be honoured by the City with recognition on the Community Contributors wall at the entrance of the HNA.
Hill says, “working alongside the City of Kitchener on the Gardening Project reminds us of how closely REALTORS® have collaborated with our community over our 75 year history.”
REALTORS® believe that healthy communities depend on a strong economy, safe neighbourhoods, a clean environment, access to housing and the protection of rights of property owners. The KWAR recognizes the need to support and enhance the Quality of Life enjoyed by residents of Waterloo region.
