On October 22, 2015, the Ottawa Real Estate Board’s (OREB) REALTORS Care® Committee, President, President-Elect and CEO participated in a Habitat for Humanity build on behalf of the Ontario REALTORS Care® Foundation.
This year, Habitat for Humanity GO (Greater Ottawa) is building four homes (two semi-detached and two single family homes) in Orléans on Cousineau Street which will be purchased by four hard-working, low income families with interest-free, long-term mortgages. These homes are being built thanks to the support of hundreds of volunteers, sponsors, suppliers, and tradespeople.
As part of a commitment to improving the community we live in, the REALTORS Care® Committee has opted to participate in a Habitat build day each year, using the funds donated from the previous year. This is the third year in a row that REALTORS®and staff have participated in a build. This year, they helped with general site clean-up and prepared the semi-detached units for window installations, including finishing window framing and putting up vapour barriers.
“This is the second Habitat build I have participated in with OREB, and this year was every bit as rewarding as it was the year before,” says David Oikle, President of the Ottawa Real Estate Board. “These builds offer an opportunity for REALTORS® and OREB staff to come together, work side-by-side, and see tangible results of how our efforts make an impact on fellow members of our community.”
Since 1993, Habitat for Humanity GO has built 47 homes in the nation’s capital, completed 11 renovations and housed more than 50 families, which includes 145 children. Together, they are giving families a hand up, not a hand out.
“I feel satisfied that we helped make a difference in the lives of these families,” says Janice Myers, CEO of the Ottawa Real Estate Board. “It’s a great feeling to play a small part in providing these four deserving families with safe, decent, and affordable housing,”
