This past June, 12 influential women from the community camped out in a 30-by-40-foot military tent at Barrie’s waterfront to raise food, funds, and awareness for the Barrie Food Bank. The event, referred to as “12 Ladies in a Tent: Helping Hands for Hungry Homes,” spanned five days and four nights. There was never a dull moment, with opening ceremonies, a chili cook-off, a tent-building race, live bands, a silent auction, and a gala dinner grand finale. During their time in the tent, close to 105,000 pounds of food was collected for families in need.
Shannon Murree (pictured right), a REALTOR® with RE/MAX Chay Realty Inc., Brokerage, was one of the 12 dedicated participants.
“It was a lot to endure the heat (no air conditioning) and weather conditions (thunder storm/leaky tent) and to be away from my family and business was very challenging but the end result was worth it,” says Shannon. “At the end, I had the opportunity of going to a loving home and a fridge full of food – where others may not have this luxury.”
These community leaders are hoping to raise more money for the Barrie Food Bank with the 12 Ladies in a Tent Charity Auction, taking place on August 15, 2012.
