Cristian Vergara is dedicated to his community and proud to promote and celebrate its multiculturalism. His dedication recently earned him the 2006 Diversity Community Award by the town of Ajax.
He has been part of the Hispanic Alliance of Ontario (formerly the Hispanic Alliance of Durham), for the past 10 years – two of which he served as President.
Vergara says he has always been involved in his community, whether it was with the Town Planning Committee of Ajax or sponsoring some of the community’s multi-cultural festivals and sports teams.
Most of Vergara’s clients are new to Canada having come from places as far as China, India, Vietnam, and Iran. While helping them find a home, Vergara also helps them settle into their new, yet unfamiliar, country by encouraging them to play an active role in the community.
“The whole aspect of a community changes when you get involved,” said Vergara, who moved to Canada from South America when he was three.
And while Vergara is proud to have received such an honor by the town of Ajax he remains modest. “It’s a beautiful award and I’m very proud and happy to receive it but it’s also very humbling,” said Vergara. “So many other people are involved (with the community).”
Now that he’s been awarded for his work and dedication it doesn’t mean Vergara plans to slow down. “It has given me a bigger push to do more,” he said. “It’s so important for us to do something for other people and for our community.”
Christian Vergara is a salesperson with Sutton Group-Heritage Realty.
