For the past 50 years, CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish has ensured that children in need in the Toronto area can enjoy toys and important support services.
Matthew Fernandes was once again pleased to hold a toy drive for the cause.
For the third year in a row, this REALTOR® with Sutton Group – Realty Systems Inc. set up donation boxes at the office and a local bakery then promoted his toy drive by mailing out postcards, creating social media posts and directly contacting clients.
“I really wanted to find a way that I could give back to the community, especially during Christmas,” Fernandes said. “It is a time to reflect and appreciate the past year and to try and help out those who may be less fortunate.”
He typically puts out the boxes in early December then starts promoting his toy drive. Seeing the gifts for children pile up is one of the most satisfying aspects of the endeavour, he said. Donations came from sales associates and staff in the office, people who live in the neighbourhood, clients, friends and his personal contributions. On Dec. 23, he delivered the toys to the charity’s head office. From there, items were given to various organizations and churches in Toronto for distribution directly to families in need.
Thanks to generous individuals and corporate sponsors, the CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish program assists thousands of children. Their latest statistics show that in 2015, with the help of the Royal Bank of Canada, LoyaltyOne and many individuals, CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish, in conjunction with Toronto Social Services, assisted 300,000 people with toys and financial support.
Fernandes said he plans to hold another toy drive in 2017.
“It’s important to me to be involved with the community and find ways to help out when we can,” he said.
